This is an opportunity to play an important role within the ETCS Onboard Engineering team, helping to ensure engineering activities and deliverables are understood, planned and delivered in line with project requirements and schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Play a lead role within the ETCS Onboard Engineering team, ensuring project-related engineering deliverables are understood and implemented in line with project schedules.
  • Provide direction and support to Project Engineers working across the project.
  • Ensure the engineering team develops and monitors engineering plans, reporting progress against budget and timeline.
  • Identify issues and potential delays and take proactive and decisive action where required.
  • Work closely with the Head of Engineering and Work Package Managers to support efficient project and engineering delivery.
  • Promote engineering excellence through consistent practices and the identification and adoption of improved processes, tools and ways of working.
  • Review engineering requirements and provide written comments and feedback as required.
  • Participate in engineering and technical reviews.
  • Review engineering deliverables to ensure they are complete, consistent and meet project requirements.
  • Work with subcontractors and fitment partners throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the delivery of engineering activities associated with the installation, testing and commissioning of modified rail vehicles.
  • Maintain a strong focus on customer requirements, quality and safety throughout all engineering activities.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • In-depth practical knowledge and experience of the  design and installation of onboard train systems, typically including ETCS, TPWS/AWS, GSM-R, Wi-Fi, CCTV and/or DAS.
  • A proven track record of delivering  installation and/or testing and commissioning projects associated with modifications to rail vehicles.
  • A tenacious and delivery-focused approach to technical work packages within a complex project environment.
  • Experience working with others to deliver a range of engineering work packages.
  • Knowledge of  rail depot procedures and site safety.
  • Ability to read and review engineering requirements, provide written comments and participate in reviews as required.
  • Experience reviewing engineering deliverables for completeness and consistency.
  • Previous experience liaising with subcontractors throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • A strong customer focus in all work undertaken.
  • Experience working to industry quality and safety standards.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the business and with new and existing customers.
  • Highly motivated, dependable and self-reliant.
  • Willingness and ability to work from  Derby three days per week, with flexibility to travel to fitment partner locations across the Midlands.

Desirable Experience

  • Understanding of  freight locomotives.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of implementing  Onboard ETCS solutions.
  • Experience working in an operational and/or maintenance environment.
  • A proven track record of working within major subcontractor environments.
  • Experience reviewing product installation designs to ensure adherence to guidelines and installation constraints.
  • An understanding of the  approvals process required to modify a train and bring it back into service.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced rail engineer to take on a key role within a major  Freight ETCS programme.

You'll be working alongside an experienced Engineering team and supporting the delivery of complex onboard rail systems across different stages of the project lifecycle.
