Worker of the Month: Putting Safety and Care First on the Railway

Every month, we recognise a professional who represents the very best of what it means to work on the railway. Someone who not only delivers on the job they are booked to do, but who also lives and breathes the values that keep our industry safe, compliant, and human.

This month, that recognition goes to Mike Price, a Point Operative working on behalf of Octavius via Deploy, whose actions during a challenging weekend possession at Micheldever demonstrated outstanding professionalism, calm leadership, and genuine care for others.

When Safety Becomes More Than a Requirement

Rail is a Safety Critical environment. Everyone working trackside understands that safety is not just a rulebook or a tick-box exercise. It is a mindset, shaped by training, experience, and the decisions made when pressure is at its highest.

During last weekend’s works, an RRV operator was injured on site. In situations like this, the way individuals respond can make a significant difference to outcomes. Mike, acting as the appointed First Aider, immediately took control of the situation.

Rather than waiting passively for external support, he stepped up. He ensured the injured driver was made comfortable, kept warm, and reassured throughout a prolonged wait for paramedics to arrive. These moments matter. They reflect competence, but also compassion.

Feedback received from COOMBES Group highlighted just how exceptional Mike’s response was, describing his care and professionalism as going above and beyond. That kind of recognition is not given lightly in our industry.

Professionalism Under Pressure

Working within rail possessions often means long hours, night shifts, unpredictable conditions, and high responsibility. It takes a certain type of professional to remain calm, clear-headed, and decisive when something goes wrong.

Mike’s actions show what good looks like in a Safety Critical role. He applied his training exactly as intended, communicated effectively, and prioritised the wellbeing of a colleague he had likely never met before that shift. That is the railway community at its best.

For candidates working across points operations, SSOWP environments, signalling support, or wider on-track roles, this is a reminder that the impact you have goes far beyond your core task. Your conduct, awareness, and readiness to act all contribute to safer sites and stronger teams.

Why Recognition Matters

The rail industry relies on skilled individuals who take pride in their work. Too often, the quiet professionalism that keeps projects moving safely goes unnoticed. At Deploy, we believe recognition matters because it reinforces the behaviours that raise standards across the network.

Mike’s recognition as Worker of the Month is not about heroics. It is about consistency, responsibility, and doing the right thing when it counts. These are the qualities clients trust and projects depend on.

We frequently speak about compliance, competence, and experience. Moments like this show how those attributes come together in real-world situations, protecting people and maintaining confidence across all parties on site.

Supporting Candidates Beyond the Booking

As a specialist rail recruitment consultancy and strategic delivery partner, Deploy works closely with professionals across Safety Critical roles, from Point Operatives and Plant Operators to supervisors and management. Our responsibility does not end when a shift starts.

We are proud to represent candidates like Mike who reflect the standards we expect and promote. Equally, we are committed to supporting our workforce with the right information, clear expectations, and ongoing communication so they feel confident and prepared on site.

Recognition from clients and partners, such as this feedback from COOMBES Group, reinforces the importance of strong collaboration between contractors, delivery partners, and the individuals on the ground.

A Thank You from All of Us

Mike, on behalf of Deploy and our wider rail community, thank you. Your actions made a real difference, and your professionalism reflects the very best of our industry.

For candidates reading this, let this be a reminder that your skills, attitude, and care matter. Rail is built on people you can rely on when it counts most.
